4. Charles M. Pepper, “The Spanish Population of Cuba and Porto Rico,” Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science (July 1901): 163-78; reprint.

Description of the non-indigenous population of Cuba and Porto Rico, especially in regard to the intermixture of persons of African or Spanish ancestry. The article begins with this sentence. “In any discussion of the natives of Cuba and Porto Rico, it is not possible entirely to separate the Latin from the African Race.” (It should be noted that African slaves and Spanish colonialists were not “the natives of Cuba and Porto Rico.”)
