14. What Became of the Slaves on a Georgia Plantation? Great Auction Sale of Slaves at Savannah, Georgia, March 2d & 3d, 1859. A Sequel to Mrs. Kemble’s Journal (N.p., 1863). (20 p.)

Account of a large slave auction in Savannah two years before the Civil War. The auction resulted in the sale of 429 men, women, and children from a single plantation and netted the owner $303,850. Two pages of the auction catalogue have been reprinted and provide the names, ages, field experience (rice or cotton), and condition (e.g., “prime woman” or “ruptured, one eye”) of individual slaves. The pamphlet also contains anecdotal histories of several slave families.
