14. The Western Freedmen’s Bulletin: A Journal for the Western Department of the American Freedmen’s Aid Commission 2 (January 1865): 25-56.
Constitution of the Western department of the American Freedmen’s Aid Commission followed by letters and reports from the field. An article entitled “Economy of Negro Suffrage,” which has been noted by Mr. Stone, argues that enfranchisement of African Americans is crucial to the economic recovery of the South. There is also an article dealing with the extension of aid to relieve poor whites. The last five pages of this issue are filled with advertisements books, stationary, and school furniture. An advertisement for Allen’s Lung Balsam promises to prevent and cure consumption.
