Critique of the colonization movement in the United States. The author argues that colonization is for the benefit of the slave holder who wishes to be rid of free men and women of color because of their influence on the slave population. “He [the reader] will find [in this monograph] that colonizationists have seduously [sic] endeavored to screen American slavery, as a system, from all imputation of moral guilt; have been instant, in season and out of season, in holding up the free negroes as most pernicious and dangerous nuisances; and have hailed with applause execrable laws, aggravating their oppression, but accompanied with pecuniary appropriations for their banishment to Africa” (emphasis in original).
