20. Leonard Bacon, A Plea for Africa; Delivered in New-Haven, July 4th, 1825 (New Haven, CT: T. G. Woodward & Co., 1825). (22 p.)

Sermon endorsing plans to colonize the western coast of African with free men and women of color from the United States. The pastor argues that Christian missions to Africa are an integral part of the process. “We see, then,” he states, “that by civilizing Africa, the degradation of Africans in other countries may be forever and completely removed; and by elevating the character of these exiles [immigrants], the civilization of their native continent may be easily affected.”
