This series consists of materials documenting the murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County, Mississippi in June 1964. The materials were gathered and compiled by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office in its 2004 re-opening of the Mississippi Burning (MIBURN) case and investigation, which culminated in the June 2005 trial and conviction of Edgar Ray Killen.
Dating from 1964 to 2007, the collection includes three components. Series 2902 consists of Federal Bureau of Investigation memoranda from the 1960s reporting the day-to-day investigation into the murders. The second component, Series 2870, is legal research compiled by the Mississippi Attorney General's office in its prosecution of Killen in 2005 (a more detailed folder-level inventory is available for this section). The final component, Series 2903, is photographs and video cassettes that document the exhumation and autopsies of the victims, as well as other evidence gathered by investigators.
