ELLIS (THOMAS) SLAVE BILL OF SALE

Biography/History:

Thomas Ellis was born in England around 1812. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had settled in Yazoo City, Yazoo County, Mississippi, and Ellis had established a blacksmith shop on Jefferson Street by 1840. The Ellises had three children: William H. (b. ca. 1840), James L. (b. ca. 1846), and Hannah (b. ca. 1849). Ellis owned at least four slaves, Eliza, Julia, Marchal, and Mary Ann, between 1856 and 1861. Thomas Ellis died shortly after making his will in 1879.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of a November 25, 1856, bill of sale for Marchal, a male slave about sixteen years of age, which was made out to Thomas Ellis of Yazoo City, Yazoo County, Mississippi. The sellers are Whiteroth and Taylor. The location of the sale is not provided.
