The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Mississippi, was established in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, on May 29, 1922, in response to an organizational call by the national American Legion Auxiliary in Indianapolis, Indiana. The first annual auxiliary convention was held in Biloxi, Mississippi, in August of 1923. After an extensive reorganization between 1923 and 1924, the auxiliary continued to meet regularly and was still active in 2001.

Sadie B. Malley was married to W. L. Malley, and they apparently lived in Merigold, Bolivar County, Mississippi, during the 1930s. She was treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Mississippi, from at least 1931 to 1933.

This collection consists of correspondence and other papers concerning the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Mississippi.

Most of the letters were written to treasurer Sadie B. Malley by a number of auxiliary members concerning business and financial matters. Some of the correspondents, who wrote from various locations in Mississippi, include Mrs. Lane T. Chandler, Mrs. Luther Maples, Mrs. E. H. O’Bannon, Mrs. T. R. Warburton, and Gladys Nash. S. F. Lowry of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, wrote Malley most frequently, usually offering advice about the treasury.

The papers include minutes from the July and September 1931 executive board meetings; a 1931 receipt; and an undated application for membership in the junior activity program of the auxiliary.
