Biography/History:

William Davis Fisher

William Davis Fisher was born in Mississippi on April 8, 1848. He and his wife, Rebecca Jane Anderson (b. February 28, 1847), settled in Learned, Hinds County, Mississippi, around 1872, and they engaged in farming. The couple had several children, including William L. (b. December 9, 1871), Ernest A. (b. 1874), Louisa Florence (b. August 22, 1876), Mary (b. May 5, 1878), Ethel (b. September 1880), and Alma (b. January 28, 1883). About two years after the death of Rebecca Jane Anderson on January 2, 1887, William Davis Fisher married Artie Holderman. This marriage resulted in several more children, including Harpin (b. April 1893), Curtis Wemberly (b. July 11, 1897), and Emery Franklin (b. December 6, 1899). William Davis Fisher died on May 1, 1908, and he was interred in the cemetery of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Newman, Hinds County, Mississippi.

Alma Fisher Blocksom

Alma Fisher, daughter of William Davis and Rebecca Jane Anderson Fisher, was born on January 28, 1883. She married Thomas Cary Blocksom about 1900. The Blocksoms had five children, Thomas Cary, Jr. (d. August 4, 1904), Alma Lee (b. January 29, 1906), Audrey Lucille (b. 1908), T. C. (b. 1910), and William Davis (d. June 14, 1911). Alma Fisher Blocksom died on May 28, 1911, and she was interred in the cemetery of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Newman.

Mary Fisher Bush

Mary Fisher, daughter of William Davis and Rebecca Jane Anderson Fisher, was born on May 5, 1878. She married John Morrison Bush about 1900. The Bushes later raised their nieces, Alma Lee and Audrey Lucille, after the death of Alma Fisher Blocksom on May 28, 1911. Mary Fisher Bush died on December 8, 1952, and she was interred in the Alexander Morrison family cemetery in Learned.

Scope and Content:

This collection primarily consists of late nineteenth to mid-twentieth-century photographs, two photograph albums, tintypes, and some handwritten and printed materials of the Fisher and Blocksom families and other potentially related families. The photographs, photograph albums, and tintypes include both identified and unidentified images. The handwritten materials consist of two autograph books, a school notebook, and envelopes. The printed materials consist of two magazine articles written during World War II and a newsclipping of a wedding announcement.

    This series consists of photographs, a photograph album, tintypes, and various handwritten materials of the Fisher and Blocksom families and the allied Bush, Farr, Herrington, and Kendall families of Hinds and Simpson counties, Mississippi, and Faulkner County, Arkansas. The photographs, photograph album, and tintypes contain various identified images of Fisher and Blocksom family members, including the children and grandchildren of William Davis Fisher. The handwritten materials include an autograph book belonging to Alma Lee Blocksom; a school notebook of Ethel Fisher containing notes from an elocution class; and an envelope addressed to T. C. Blocksom.

    This series contains scattered identified and unidentified photographs, a photograph album, tintypes, postcards, and handwritten and printed materials of various people whose connection to the Fisher and Blocksom families is uncertain. The identified photographs are of members of the Barlow, Bowman, Collins, Condray, Coody, Craig, East, Hackler, Mallette, Mitchell, Oliver, Parmenter, Randall, Rochester, Sanders, and White families of Faulkner County, Arkansas; New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana; and Hinds County, Mississippi. The unidentified photographs and tintypes are portraits of men, women, and children. The postcards are addressed to various members of the Sellers family of Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi, and are from vacationing friends and family. The handwritten materials consist of an autograph book belonging to Lurline Condray and envelopes of Louzelle Coody. Among the printed materials are two magazine articles written during World War II entitled "Essential?" and "Victory Tax for Victory" and a newsclipping announcing the marriage of Grace Mitchell Plumlee and Henry Clay Ashcraft.
