SHERWOOD (S. B.) LETTER

1853

Biography/History:

S. B. Sherwood was born around 1829, and he apparently had a sister named Anna. He probably lived in Warrenton, Warren County, Mississippi, and he died of typhoid fever in a hospital in Vicksburg on July 2, 1854. Sherwood was probably buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.

Scope and Content:

S. B. Sherwood wrote a letter to his sister, Anna, on November 2, 1853. Writing from Warrenton, Warren County, Mississippi, he apologized for his tardy reply to her letter of August 9, 1853. He told her that the yellow fever epidemic had spread from New Orleans, Louisiana, up the Mississippi River for about five hundred miles, killing roughly half of the inhabitants of Warrenton and thousands of others in the Mississippi Valley.

Series Identification:
