The United Confederate Veterans was formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 10, 1889, from numerous local associations of Confederate soldiers and sailors. The organization was founded for patriotic, historical, social, and benevolent purposes. The constitution adopted by the organization established an organizational hierarchy similar to the military. The national organization was made up of smaller state organizations. Each state organization was composed of various camps. The national organization continued to meet every year until its sixtieth annual meeting, when it was voted that the next reunion would be the last. The United Confederate Veterans ceased its annual meetings with the sixty-first convention that was held on May 30, 1951.

The J. J. Whitney Camp No. 10 of Fayette, Jefferson County, Mississippi, was formed on November 11, 1890. By a vote of the members, the camp was named for the first lieutenant of the organization, J. J. Whitney, of Fayette. At the second annual convention of the United Confederate Veterans in June of 1891, the J. J. Whitney Camp No. 10 was admitted into the fellowship of the United Confederate Veterans and given the name J. J. Whitney Camp No. 22. The group continued to hold regular meetings and participate in the national convention until April 1920, when the remaining members decided to pay no additional dues to the national or state organizations.

This collection consists of two minute books, an undated membership record book, and one typewritten manuscript. The minute books offer detailed accounts of the meetings of the J. J. Whitney Camp No. 10, United Confederate Veterans, from November 1890 to April 1920, and a roster of members and their ranking within the organization. Of particular interest is the membership record book that contains the service histories of the members of J. J. Whitney Camp, as submitted by the members. The 1916 manuscript (typewritten) entitled "The Companies Who Left Jefferson County for the Civil War," by Ona E. Hammett, contains partial muster rolls. Also included are descriptions of the companies mustered during the Civil War from Jefferson County, as related to the author by former members of those companies, and with annotations by the author.
