Biography/History:

Andrew J. Benison was born in Smith County, Mississippi, in April of 1855. He had moved to Jasper County, Mississippi, by 1880. Benison married Flora E. Sherman of Jasper County in September of 1880. He owned a "Grocery, Drugs, and Notions" store and was active in the community of Paulding, Mississippi, between the years 1883 and 1894. Benison was also a public school trustee, poll manager, and newspaper publisher. With the assistance of the Jasper County Board of Supervisors, Benison provided medicine for the poor. In December 1898, Benison moved with his wife and four children, Daisy, William J., Thomas, and Charles, to Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi, where they remained until at least 1930.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of Andrew J. Benison’s accounting ledger for the years 1883 to 1893. He records account holders’ names, goods sold, the prices charged for each item, and the amount owed by each account holder. Also listed are the goods Benison purchased from various suppliers to resell in his store and the prices he paid. Of particular interest are entries for Threefoot Brothers and Company, Van Vleet and Company, and G. H. Tichenor.
