Michael McIntosh Mayers was the seventh child born to Michael and Susanna McIntosh Mayers on August 12, 1805, in Richmond, Virginia. Michael McIntosh Mayers was the grandfather of eighth judicial district circuit court judge Alonzo G. Mayers of Brandon, Mississippi.

This memoir recounts the experiences of Michael McIntosh Mayers as he traveled throughout the United States, mainly in Indiana, Iowa, and Virginia. He provides details of family and social life during the nineteenth century. Mayers also includes vivid accounts of frontier life, such as being attacked by a bear.
