NEWCOMERS CLUB (JACKSON, MISS.) RECORDS

1951-1979

Biography/History:

The Newcomers Club was organized in Jackson, Mississippi, in August of 1951. The stated objective of the club was "the obliteration of loneliness of newcomers to Jackson." To accomplish this goal, the Newcomers Club held weekly meetings to play bridge or canasta, as well as a number of socials throughout the year. The club also staged fashion shows and helped raise money for local charities. The lone eligibility requirement of the club was that the prospective member could not have lived in Jackson more than one year.
