DALEY (DAVID ALLEN) ACCOUNT BOOK

Biography.
David Allen Daley was born in Boston, England. He emigrated to the United
States as a young man. Daley met his future wife, Mary Hudson, in New Orleans,
Louisiana. The Daleys settled in Jackson, Mississippi, after they were
married. They had fifteen children including Adaline Daley who married
Charles Manship, Civil War mayor of Jackson. Daley was a cabinetmaker,
carpenter, and contractor with many clients in the Jackson area. He was
engaged by William Nichols in 1836 to serve as a contractor during the
construction of the Mississippi State Capitol and was associated with the
project until 1838. Daley died in Madison County, on July 3, 1869.
Appendix 2: Scope and Content Note.
The collection consists of a fragmentary account book of David Allen Daley
documenting a portion of his cabinetmaking and carpentry trade with various
individuals and businesses in the Jackson, area from 1836 to 1841. The most important entries are those documenting his work as a
contractor during the construction of the Mississippi State Capitol. There
is also an account for furnishings purchased for the Mississippi Governor's
Mansion. Other significant accounts include those of Charles H. Manship.
Daley's account book also contains accounts for general merchandise sold
to individuals, especially during 1864 and 1865. The account book is indexed.
