MOORE (SAMUEL BLANCH) LETTERS

Biography/History:

Samuel Blanch Moore was a Liberty, Amite County, Mississippi, farmer who served as a sergeant in the Seventh Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Moore died on May 31, 1864.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains three letters from Samuel Blanch Moore to his wife, Mary. They were written from Shelbyville, Chattanooga, and Bridgeport, Tennessee, on March 23, 1863, July 12, 1863, and August 20, [1863], respectively. In the letters, Moore discusses day-to-day events, as well as his reasons for fighting, his impressions of deserters, and how the treatment of deserters changed during the course of the war. He also briefly reflects on the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
