VARDAMAN (JAMES K.) LETTERS

1918; 1919

James K. Vardaman was governor of Mississippi (1904–1908) and U.S. Senator from Mississippi (1913–1919).

This collection contains a letter from Senator James K. Vardaman to his stepson, Douglass Robinson of Sidon, August 24, 1918, 2 pp., and a letter from Senator James A. Reed (Missouri) to Vardaman, June 9, 1919, 3 pp.

In the letter from Vardaman to his stepson, Vardaman mentions the recent campaign but primarily discusses his opposition to the draft of eighteen year olds during World War I ("Its a damned outrage to rob the cradle.…") and his dislike of President Woodrow Wilson ("I do not think President Wilson has any more love for democracy than the Kaiser").

The letter from James Reed to Vardaman discusses his opposition to the League of Nations. The letter is quite lengthy and speculates on the Peace Treaty and possible actions by Wilson in forming a League of Nations.
