Scope and Content:

This collection spans six generations of the Surget, McKittrick, MacNeil and allied families who owned many plantations in Natchez and Adams County, Mississippi, and in Louisiana. It contains family papers and records dating from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. However, as many early Surget family papers and records were apparently lost when the first Cherry Grove plantation house burned, there are not many items in the collection dating before the 1860s. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence and financial and legal records documenting the ownership and management of plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana. Day-labor, sharecropping, and tenant records and thoroughbred-horse-farm records are included. A significant amount of personal correspondence is also present. There are relatively few family photographs.
