BIRCHETT (RAYMOND) COLLECTION

1775-1949

Biography/History:

Raymond Birchett inherited the materials in this collection. Most of the papers were passed down from his great-grandfather, J. A. Klein; grandmother Tryphena Blanche Holder Fox; grandfather T. G. Birchett; and father J. A. K. Birchett, who was an antiquarian and probably responsible for accumulating the majority of the collection. Little is known of Mrs. C. T. Eggleston or Robert J. Turnbull.

Scope and Content:

This collection probably reflects the collecting interests of J. A. K. Birchett. This is especially true of the newspapers (series 9) where a number of early titles (some facsimiles) may be found. Series 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 contain various items relating to the Civil War. Series 2 includes items on the Vicksburg campaign and its aftermath. Series 3 contains a War of 1812 broadside.

Series Identification:

  1. Mrs. C. T. Eggleston Papers. 1862-1866; 1872; n.d. 38 items.

Miscellaneous papers relating to the Vicksburg campaign and the aftermath of the Civil War. Included are items regarding Mrs. C. T. Eggleston's efforts (ca. 1865) to raise money for Jefferson Davis and a letter (A.L.S.) from Varina Howell Davis declining such offers of assistance; items relating to Eggleston's work with the Rebel Minstrel Fund for Confederate Soldiers (1865); various documents concerning the assistance Eggleston and her friends provided to Confederate soldiers; and documents pertaining to Eggleston's work as president of the Vicksburg Confederate Cemetery Association.
