Biography/History:

Miss Mary Wharton was born March 1, 1889. From 1908 to 1914 she was organist and choir director for the Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson. Miss Wharton was a concert pianist. She studied under Alexander Raab, Louis Victor Saar, Felix Borowski and Georgia Kober. She taught at St. Catherine's School in Bolivar, Tennessee; Queens College, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Belhaven College, Jackson. Miss Wharton was mentioned in Who's Who in America as one of Mississippi's leading musicians.

Scope and Content:

Most of the collection is Wharton's religious essays, written for her Sunday school class. There are several scrapbooks, two of which deal with Wharton's stay at Belhaven College (1916–1935) and Queens College (1935–1940). There are also letters of recommendation, the Arms of the Hopkins and Wharton families, and a photo album of the Wharton-Hopkins-Johnston families.
