Biography/History:
Miss Mary Wharton was born March 1, 1889. From 1908 to 1914 she was organist
and choir director for the Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson. Miss Wharton
was a concert pianist. She studied under Alexander Raab, Louis Victor Saar,
Felix Borowski and Georgia Kober. She taught at St. Catherine's School
in Bolivar, Tennessee; Queens College, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Belhaven
College, Jackson. Miss Wharton was mentioned in Who's Who
in America as one of Mississippi's leading musicians.
Scope and Content:
Most of the collection is Wharton's religious essays, written for her Sunday
school class. There are several scrapbooks, two of which deal with Wharton's
stay at Belhaven College (19161935) and Queens College (19351940). There
are also letters of recommendation, the Arms of the Hopkins and Wharton
families, and a photo album of the Wharton-Hopkins-Johnston families.

Box 6 holds Wharton's scrapbooks dealing with Belhaven and Queens colleges
and Katharine Wharton's scrapbook.
Box 7 has two scrapbooks dealing with musical subjects.
Box 8 has one scrapbook made for Mrs. Enfield Hopkins by her sister, Mary
Gneathouse in 1858 and two others with miscellaneous clippings.
Box 9 has two scrapbooks by Mary Wharton, one of poems cut from newspapers.
Box 10 has one scrapbook made by Kate Wharton for her sister, Lucy, and
one made for Mary E. Hopkins by her mother.
Genealogical. Box 11 holds the photo-album of the Wharton-Hopkins-Johnson
families, which contains notes on family beginnings and the arms of the
Hopkins and Wharton families.
