Biography/History:

Benjamin "Ben" Magruder Disharoon

Benjamin Magruder Disharoon, was born May 13, 1927, in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi, the son of May Florine Levy (May 1, 1893-September 10, 1979) and George Lindsay Disharoon (February 7, 1892-October 6, 1952). He had three siblings: George Lindsay Disharoon, Jr. (October 18, 1919-January 11, 2002), Julia Sylvia Disharoon (April 1, 1921-May 31, 1977), and Nancy Marie 'Rie' Disharoon (July 22, 1922-June 29, 2019).

Ben attended Port Gibson public schools, graduating in May 1944. After attending the University of Mississippi in 1944-1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy on August 1, 1945 and served until August 24, 1946 during World War II. After his discharge, he enrolled in Louisiana State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts in 1949 and a Master of Arts degree in Fine Arts, Painting, and Sculpture in 1951. He traveled extensively in Europe in 1951-1952, and, upon returning home, continued his artwork. From 1952 to 1958, he and his family maintained a farm near Port Gibson.

In 1958, he served as Director of the Claiborne County Department of Public Welfare and later served as the Regional Supervisor of the Department of Public Welfare. In July 1959, Ben married Susan Martindale Clay, the granddaughter of U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky. The couple had four daughters between 1960 and 1972: Mary Martha Disharoon, Nancy Disharoon, Elizabeth Disharoon, and Jill Disharoon. Ben was partially disabled when he developed multiple sclerosis in 1960. In 1963, he received a Master of Science degree in social work from the University of Tennessee.

In 1980, he published under the title Love, Ben many of the letters he had written home during his European travels. These letters were written by a young Mississippian, fresh out of art school, who decided to tour Europe and see the treasures he had been studying. He is constantly comparing social situations there to ones back at home and his comments on the attitude of the Europeans toward Americans is interesting. Most of these letters were included in the privately published edition, Love, Ben (1980). Two letters in the collection were not published in the book, dated March 12, 1952 and March 25, 1952.

Benjamin Magruder Disharoon died at the age of 75 on November 7, 2002, and is buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi, near his parents and siblings.
