These letters were found in a book purchased by Ms. Babbs in a Cincinnati
used book store. Both letters are initialed by the writer, who has not
been identified.
Scope and Content
The writer of these letters was a lawyer, who comments freely on the state
of the Mississippi judiciary and on local Mississippi politics in the Pontotoc-Coffeeville
area. The letters written on December 28, 1838 and March 15, 1839 were addressed to an Elvira, who presumably lived at Collabogue
(near Holly Springs, Mississippi.?)
