CUNNINGHAM (W. J.) TYPESCRIPT "AGONY AT GALLOWAY"

1977

Photocopy of the original unpublished typescript, "Agony at Galloway," by W. J. Cunningham of Memphis, Tennessee. The volume concerns Galloway Memorial Methodist Church during the years 1963–1966, when Cunningham was pastor of the church. The book deals specifically with the "closed door policy" of the church, which did not allow Negroes to attend service at the church. In 1961, the Official Board of Galloway had passed "a segregationist resolution" instructing the ushers to "decline to admit any person, white or colored who…seek admission for the purpose of creating an incident resulting in a breach of the peace." This policy was abandoned in January 1966. Cunningham traces the actions of the congregation throughout the period from 1963 to 1966. W. J. Cunningham retains all copyright to the typescript.
