Roll 5 (MF Roll # 36218):
Materials primarily relate to Francis Surget, Jr., and Eustace Surget during period 1860-1867; a few items relate to Mary Attwell Linton and Samuel L. Winston; at end of roll is an account of estate sale of William Surget dated January 5, 1835; primarily bills, receipts, accounts; to assist researchers, it will be divided into three segments in order in which they appear on roll, and within each segment, under individual family members to which materials relate.
First Segment:
- First part of roll contains receipts relating to Francis Surget, Jr., several bills from Natchez Gas Light Company indicate that Surget had gaslights at Clifton; increasing purchases from New York suppliers in summer and fall of 1864.
- Receipts relating to Ashwood Plantation (Wilkinson County): tax receipt, January 26, 1863; receipt for superintending Ashwood Plantation slaves at Port Hudson, March 21, 1863; receipt for medical services, March 25, 1863.
- United States tax receipt, Natchez, July 14, 1864.
- Miscellaneous accounts with blacks indicate they were being paid cash wages as least as early as May 1, 1864.
- Receipts from New York, 1863-1864; Mrs. Samuel M. Davis at New York Hotel; purchase of half-spring wagon; pew rental at Calvary Church.
Second Segment:
- Materials relating to Francis Surget, Jr.:
- Taxes on New Orleans property, 1860-1864.
- Medical receipt, Dr. William H. Holcombe, for services at Clifton and Cocodra plantations, 1862.
- Overseers’ receipts, Concordia Parish plantations, 1861; 1864; 1866.
- Miscellaneous receipts from New York retailers indicate that Mr. and Mrs. Francis Surget were staying at New York Hotel, October 1866, and in Montreal the month before; subscription to New York Express, July 1866-July 1867.
- Materials relating to Eustace Surget:
- Tax receipts, Adams County and Concordia Parish, January 1, 1861; April 27, 1865; March 13, 1866.
- Plantation affairs: various receipts for plantation supplies (1857) seem to indicate a third Eustace Surget plantation, Maltha, in addition to Morville and Palmetto plantations; bill from Dr. E. M. Blackburn, December 30, 1860; overseer’s receipts, Morville Plantation, 1865.
- Financial affairs: letter from Liverpool, England, cotton factor George Green Son and Company to Eustace Surget, Selma, March 4, 1865, commenting on Surget’s military service; receipts from New Orleans cotton factor George S. Mandeville, 1865; sale of New Orleans property, August 1866.
- Miscellaneous receipts: pew rental, Calvary Church, New York City, 1864-1866.

- Account of sale of William Surget estate, January 5, 1835; total amount from sale was $80,427.375; purchasers of items in estate included Adam Lewis Bingaman, Mr. Lapice, James Metcalfe, John Anthony Quitman, James Raily, Frederick Stanton, Francis Surget, Sr., Jacob Surget, James Surget, Sr., and John P. Walworth, most of whom bought slaves.
This part of roll also includes settlement of claims against estate of John Linton, 1830s; also a large number of checks dated December 1860-January 1861 from Eustace Surget to various payees and drawn on W. A. Britton and Company.
