Dr. William Clifford Morse, son of James Woodward and Jane (Brown) Morse, was born in Starr, Ohio. He received his A.B. at Ohio State University in 1906; A. M. in 1908; and Ph.D at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1927. In 1934, Dr. Morse was appointed as director of the Mississippi State Geological Survey. Here he initiated a more detailed study of the geology of the state than ever before and pushed forward a comprehensive survey of the state's ground-water resources.
