LEGGETT (L. CANDLER) MANUSCRIPTS

Biography/History:

Linton Candler Leggett was born in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi, on November 7, 1911. He married Ruth Bailey, daughter of H. T. and Alpha Clinton Bailey of Pelahatchie, Rankin County, Mississippi. The couple settled in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, where Leggett was an account executive with WJDX radio and WLBT television stations. Leggett was active in the Jackson Advertising Club, the Mississippi Numismatic Association, and the Photography Club. Linton Candler Leggett died at the age of eighty-six on July 5, 1998, and was interred at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of two manuscript versions of L. Candler Leggett’s book entitled Mississippi: Obsolete Paper Money and Scrip (1975). The circa 1974 version is a typescript with some editorial annotations and photocopies of paper money and scrip that are referenced in the text. The 1975 version contains editorial annotations regarding font sizes and page numbers and photographs of paper money and scrip that were used in the published edition.
