Biography/History:

Margaret Priestley lived near Bringiers, St. James Parish, Louisiana, in 1840. She and her nephew, possibly a William Priestley also living in St. James Parish, had Natchez business affairs that were handled through physician William Dunbar, son of William Dunbar, noted planter, scientist, explorer, and writer of the Natchez District. Margaret Priestley had at least two daughters; her nephew had a daughter named Eliza.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains photocopies of two letters, both concerning annuities transferred by the unnamed nephew of Margaret Priestley. The first letter, dated January 2, 1840, is written by William Dunbar of Natchez, Mississippi, to Margaret Priestley of Bringiers, Louisiana. This letter discusses three annuities that Dunbar had not yet received. The second letter, dated January 15, 1840, is written by Margaret Priestley from St. James Parish to her nephew. In this letter, Priestley informs her nephew of the incomplete transfer of the annuities and suggests changing trustees. Priestley also discusses her recent trip from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and anticipated family visits.
