MISSISSIPPI YMCA RECORDS
1919 - 1967
The first organizations of Young Men's Christian Associations in America
were formed in Montreal and Boston in 1851, following the plan of a society
organized in England in 1844. Although an effort was made in Jackson as
early as April 6, 1860, to organize a Young Men's Christian Association,
the present Young Men's Christian Association came into being at a meeting
held in the First Baptist Church, on April 9, 1905. The formal charter
was issued to the Young Men's Christian Association on December 14, 1906.
Since that time, the YMCA has been a vital part of Jackson's progress
as a Christian community. The collection contains:
