Correspondence and fiscal papers of James Allen who came to Warren County from New Jersey and settled on the land which comprised Nanachehaw Plantation. The collection contains the family papers of his nephew and ward, James Bennett Allen of Port Gibson, originally from New Jersey, and his son, Charles Bernham Allen. The family papers of the son of James Bennett Allen, Leigh Briscoe Allen (born 1887) of Port Gibson are also included here.
During the years 1856-1858, James Allen, his wife F. M. Allen, and son Charles B. Allen (born 1843), traveled through Europe where Charles Allen was educated. (Box 1-2) During the Civil War, Charles B. Allen was a member of Company A, Bradford's Battalion, of Warren County Scouts and Guards, CSA. (Box 1) Allen served as Colonel and Provost Marshal of Warrenton District, Office Provost Marshall of Freedman, 1865 (Box 2).
James Bennett Allen of Port Gibson (who lived most of his life in New Jersey) developed a high quality staple of cotton known as Allen's Long Staple Cottons.
