LIPSCOMB (WILLIAM LOWNDES) AND FAMILY LETTERS

William Lowndes Lipscomb, Civil War surgeon, was the author of a history of Columbus and Lowndes County. He was the son of Dabney and Jane Hardwicke Lipscomb of Columbus. In 1854 he married Tallulah Harris, and one of his children was Dabney Arthur Lipscomb (1859–1931) who held various prominent positions in state educational institutions.

This collection contains five letters (n.d., 1849–1850) from William Lowndes Lipscomb to his mother, some of which were written from medical school in New Orleans. There are two letters (1845, 1850) from Dabney Lipscomb to his wife, Jane. In 1931 Dabney Arthur Lipscomb died, and a telegram and sympathy acknowledgement card to Dr. Dunbar Rowland are also contained in this collection.
