GAYARRE (CHARLES) FAMILY LETTERS

n.d.; 1840 - 1862

Charles Gayarre' (1805–1895) was Louisiana's most famous historian. The grandson of Etienne de Bore', he studied law and was involved in politics. In 1843 he married Mrs. Shadie Anne Sullivan of Jackson. There were no children born to this marriage. These ten items are copies of original letters from Charles and Shadie Anne Gayarre' to her aunt, Eliza Wright, later of Lowndes County. In a letter dated July 27, 1862(?), Mrs. Gayarre' writes about conditions in New Orleans under General Butler, "the filthiest and vilest of stinking Yankeedom."
