Countess. The cyphering book has entries "John Countiss, Russell County, Virginia, His Cyphren Book," and on March 17, 1808 there is an entry "J. (Joseph) Sampson, Teacher." The genealogical material is filed in the genealogical file, and "They Passed This Way" has been catalogued in the library.
