LITTLE (PETER)-GRIFFIN (ALONZO MERCER) PAPERS

1787 - 1921

Business papers, lease agreements, a few family letters, financial statements, promissory notes, land records, and genealogical information pertaining to the families of Peter Little (1784–1857) and Alonzo Mercer Griffin (1811–1872) of Natchez. Peter Little, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, moved to Natchez in the early 1800s, brought the first steam engine to that area, and with it operated a sawmill. Little, a lumberman, planter, and financier, built Rosalie in 1820 and "The Parsonage" in 1840, and was married to Eliza Low. They had no children. Alonzo Mercer Griffin moved to Natchez at an early age to live with his uncle, Peter Little, who had adopted Griffin's sister, Eliza. Griffin married Maria Louisa Cordery on August 11, 1836, and they became the parents of twelve children. Griffin was postmaster at Natchez and was administrator of the estate of Peter Little. Of interest are two survey maps by William Vousdan, Surveyor-General of Spanish Natchez.
