THOMPSON (JACOB) LETTER

Biography/History:

Jacob Thompson, born in North Carolina in 1810, served as United States congressman from Mississippi from 1839 to 1851, was United States Secretary of the Interior from 1857 to 1861, and was elected to the Mississippi Legislature from Lafayette County in 1863. He was elected to the board of trustees of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, and died on March 24, 1885, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Scope and Content:

The letter was written by Jacob Thompson, Secretary of the Interior under President James Buchanan, to James W. Denver, territorial governor of Kansas, and refers to the voting on the Lecompton Constitution.
