Papers relating to the organization and operation of the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad. Included among the papers are letters relating to the survey of the right-of-way from Florence, Mississippi, to Aberdeen, Mississippi; the merger of the Canton, Kosciusko, Aberdeen, and Tuscumbia Railroad with the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad Company; several letters dealing with specifications of rails to be manufactured in Liverpool, England, for the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad; one letter dated Canton, Mississippi, March 28, 1853, and dealing with certificates of stock in the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad; a letter dated Washington, D.C., October 14, 1865, addressed to Major-General George H. Thomas, Commanding, Military Division of the Tennessee and written by Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. The Letter authorizes the sale of surplus railroad "rolling stock" at current Northern prices, to Southern railroads in need of such equipment. The letter sets forth the terms for purchase and payment of such equipment; and a letter dated Memphis, Tennessee, July 26, 1873, addressed to Colonel E. D. Frost, Water Valley, Mississippi. This letter deals with a device for "cooling or ventelating (sic) and excluding the dust from passenger coaches on railroads."
