Microfilmed copy of the diary and newspaper clippings kept by John Logan Power of Jackson as first lieutenant and adjutant of the First Regiment of Mississippi Light Artillery, Mississippi Volunteers, CSA. The diary and clippings cover principally the siege of Vicksburg and include descriptions of the battles of Chickasaw Bayou, Snyder's Bluff, Baker's Creek, Big Black River, and Blake's Levee. A description of Jackson is given in the entry for July 14, 1863. Lists of discharges, non-commissioned staff officers, members of the regimental band, and a list of the members of Company G separated from their company at Baker's Creek, May 16, 1863, are given in the back of the diary. Microfilm copy of fifty letters written by John Logan Power, editor of The Weekly Clarion, Jackson, to his wife at Union Church, Jefferson County, describing the progress of the yellow fever epidemic. Also included are three broadsides published by Col. Power, giving news of the epidemic from all over the state.
