SHIELDS (THOMAS H.) PAPERS

1937 - 1951

Papers of Thomas H. Shields, who was born at Rokeby, near Natchez, on March 20, 1865, and died at Jackson on February 23, 1948. Captain Shields served during the War with Spain as captain of Company A, First Mississippi Volunteer Infantry, and was a charter member and organizer of the Harry C. Marshall Camp, Spanish War Veterans. Captain Shields was closely identified with the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Mississippi, and was executive secretary of the Diocese for 25 years.

These papers include certificates of reorganization from the Spanish War Veterans, programs of General Conventions of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and a history of Harry C. Marshall Auxiliary to the United Spanish War Veterans, compiled by Mrs. Thomas H. Shields. The letters in the collection concern Captain Shields' participation in the work of the Dioceses of Mississippi and the Spanish War Veterans principally.
