Correspondence and business papers of David W. Haley (February 12, 1793–October 19, 1859), who came to Council Spring, Madison County, from Tennessee. He attained the rank of major under Andrew Jackson, carried mail on the Natchez Trace, was surveyor of Indian lands, held the contract to remove the Choctaw Indians after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, and served as state senator from 1836 to 1840.

The first item in the collection is a map of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend drawn by Captain Hugh Ervin and dated March 27, 1814. The next paper is dated January 28, 1826, and the last David W. Haley paper is dated June 27, 1857. There are six items from January 1, 1871 to November 16, 1889. There are five items in 1936 which include an interview by Moreau B. Chambers with David W. Haley, son of David W. Haley; the family record copied from the Haley family Bible; a picture of David W. Haley taken on April 21, 1936; and a letter from him on May 6, 1936. The papers include five letters from Powhatan Ellis (January 28, 1826–November 29, 1828), one signed by S. J. Gholson and J. F. H. Claiborne (January 23, 1837), and several letters to Gholson, Claiborne, and S. S. Prentiss by government officials.
