DOCKERY (OCTAVIA) PAPERS

1882 - 1942

Correspondence and invitations, addressed to Miss Octavia Dockery of Natchez, Adams County, daughter of Confederate General Thomas P. Dockery of Arkansas, from friends and admirers including Hon. Thomas L. Bulger, Attorney, Dadeville, Alabama; Hon. Robert McFarland, Attorney, Florence, Alabama; Hon. Alexander M. Dockery, U. S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. Octavia Dockery gained national notoriety as one of the principals in the famed "Goat Castle" murder case. As guardian of eccentric Richard Dana of Natchez, Miss Dockery was accused with Dana of the murder of Miss Jennie Merrill in 1932. Both were acquitted. Dana, son of a distinguished churchman, the Rev. Charles D. Dana, died in 1948. Miss Dockery died in 1949.

This collection includes six broadsides and a typed copy of the Supreme Court opinions of January 12, 1942, upholding the claim of Seaman Zerkowsky to the Glenwood ("Goad Castle") property. The collection is divided by dates as follows: n.d., 2 pieces; 1880–1890, 10 pieces; 1890–1900, 13 pieces; 1933, 1 piece; 1942, 1 piece.
