NUNN (E. F.) AND COMPANY PAPERS

Biography/History:

Major E. F. Nunn settled in Noxubee County, Mississippi, in 1835. In partnership with L. L. Anderson, he co-founded the firm of Nunn and Anderson in Shuqualak, Noxubee County, around 1845. The firm was advertised as a "Dealer in Dry Goods, Dress Goods, Boots, Shoes, Clothing, Hats, Caps, Stationery, Furniture, Hardware, and All Kinds of Groceries." Major E. F. Nunn, Jr., operated the firm after the death of his father in 1873. The firm had become E. F. Nunn and Company by 1895. It was still owned and operated by descendants of the founder in the 1940s.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of accounting journals and ledgers and a few miscellaneous papers of E. F. Nunn and Company of Shuqualak, Mississippi. The accounting journals (10) cover the periods of January 2-August 31, 1871; April 1, 1872-October 30, 1876; December 1, 1877-December 30, 1879; and January 1, 1881-December 30, 1882. The accounting ledgers (30) cover the periods of June 27, 1870-February 24, 1879; January 2, 1880-December 31, 1881; January 1, 1883-December 31, 1885; January 1, 1888-December 31, 1889; January 1, 1894-December 31, 1896; and January 1, 1898-December 31, 1914.
