WELTY (EUDORA) COLLECTION

Series 16. The Eye of the Story

1943-1978; n.d.
5.35 cubic ft.

Note on arrangement and description:

This series contains material prepared for or related to Welty’s collection of essays and reviews, The Eye of the Story, published in 1978. The first part of the series consists of originals and copies of typescripts of individual essays and reviews that were collected in the book. These are arranged according to their order in the section of the published work for which they were prepared. The next part of the series consists of material associated with The Eye of the Story. This includes drafts considered for the book, a number of which were sent to Albert Erskine of Random House by Welty. This section includes folders created by Welty or Erskine, as well as editorial comments by Erskine and Welty’s response to them. There follow projected front pages for The Eye of the Story; the author’s copy and the setting copy of the book; and materials from the printer. These last include galleys, proofs, mechanicals, repros, and blues.

The material added to this series from the gift of Welty’s Estate appears in the first section of individual essays and reviews, and forms part of the “associated materials” immediately following it. This material is indicated by the use of bold font. All pieces have been assigned numbers by the archivist: these appear in this description in brackets. Changes in foldering and boxes have been made throughout this series to permit easier access to the materials and better preservation of them. The researcher may therefore find that original box and folder numbers have changed as well. Published versions of some of the essays and reviews in The Eye of the Story may be found in Series 23 and 24.

“Chekhov Paper” or “Reality in Chekhov’s Stories.” n.d. 104 pieces.
A folder labeled by Welty “Chekhov paper” contained a typescript draft consisting of both typed and photocopied pages, with corrections made before copying, and handwritten amendments in ink or pencil. Some of these changes appear on separate pages, and some take the form of pinned and loose strips, or corrections placed on the page with adhesive. The first twenty-six pages in the original folder [now in box 320, folder 2, pp. 1-26] appear to be another copy of the completed version Welty sent to Aswell as described above, but with additional handwritten corrections. That this may have been a near final version is suggested by numbers assigned by Welty on the first page of this draft, “I, 5,” that correspond to this essay’s position in The Eye of the Story. The remaining pages and strips appear variants of pieces or sections of the essay. The draft has been foldered to preserve groupings of pages that may have been made by Welty and existed at the time of processing. Bracketed page numbers have been assigned to each piece by the archivist, but these reflect only the order of the pages and strips at the time of processing.

ESSAYS APPEARING IN “II. ON WRITING”

“LOOKING AT SHORT STORIES”

Short Stories” or “Some Views on the Reading and Writing of Short Stories." n.d. 59 pieces.
This carbon typescript draft with corrections and annotations in ink and pencil bears the title on its first page “Some Views on the Reading and Writing of Short Stories.” It was contained in a folder labeled by Welty “Short Stories.” On the title page, Welty crossed out a note, probably written to Diarmuid Russell since the draft bears her Russell & Volkening address, stating “writing - this is about the first half of my lectures – will send you remainder when I type it, please read + love.” While the draft is undated, this note and the title changes suggest that the draft was created sometime between Welty’s lecture in 1947 entitled “Some Views on the Reading and Writing of Short Stories," and the publication of "Short Stories” in 1949 (see the description of “Looking at Short Stories” in Box 60, folder 5, written by Suzanne Marrs below). The draft is numbered by Welty and runs forty-eight pages. At the end are pages and strips [numbered 49-58 by the archivist] that appear to be variants. Welty has assigned numbers 2-9, and 11 to some of these, suggesting that these are alternate opening pages.

This typescript draft with numerous corrections in ink and pencil bears the same changes in title as the carbon version above (Box 326, Folder 3), but is not identical. 328 2
An Interior Affair.” n.d. 15 pieces.
Carbon typescript with handwritten corrections in pencil and pen. Pages are numbered by Welty. On the first page, Welty has written in ink “written as lecture, Millsaps College, fall, 1964” “Appeared in Atlantic Oct. 1965, as “Must the Novel[sic] Crusade?”
328 3
“Keela, the Outcast Indian Maiden.” n.d. 6 pieces.
Photocopy of pages numbered by Welty as 82-87, identified by Welty as an extract from the Modern Library edition. Her direction “begin” appears at the top of the first page, and there are corrections in ink and pencil by Welty. In 1964, Welty gave a reading of “Keela…” after her lecture of “An Interior Affair” at Millsaps College (see Suzanne Marrs, Eudora Welty: A Biography, p. 313). The juxtaposition of this extract with the draft immediately above suggests that this passage of “Keela…” may have been sent to Erskine as an accompaniment to “An Interior Affair,” although “Keela…” was not published in The Eye of the Story.
328 4
Miscellaneous pages. n.d. 2 pieces.
A partial page, handwritten in ink by Welty, discusses as a parenthesis, her inclusion of certain fairy tales in an unnamed work [p. 35]. A carbon typescript of a complete page from “Words into Fiction” is marked “WF” in type, and “13” in ink by Welty [p.36].
328 5
“A Note on Henry Green.” n.d. 20 pieces.
Carbon typescript bearing on the first page a handwritten note by Welty “Carbon of copy sent to Heath in London Aug. ’61 final version.” This version is a variant of that appearing in The Eye of the Story as “Henry Green: Novelist of the Imagination.” The pages are numbered by Welty and there are corrections in ink and pencil.
