This typescript was returned to Welty by The New Yorker in 1970. With it is a letter from The New Yorker Fiction Department dated October 13 [1970]. The envelope from The New Yorker was labeled by Welty with: “original mss. copy-edited” “The Demonstrators” “Intro. To ’Hanging by a Thread’, ” although only “The Demonstrators” accompanies it. The typescript carries a manuscript number, the date of “Nov. 22, 1965,” and copy-edits. There are also handwritten corrections by Welty in ink and pencil, and pasted-in additions. This version varies from the final one published in The New Yorker, and bears different corrections than those appearing in the typescript above.
