Biography/History:

The Mansion House was a hotel located on the corner of Franklin and Wall streets in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. Colonel Levin R. Marshall owned the hotel in the 1830s. Elijah Bell was the proprietor of the Mansion House by 1835, a position he held until June of 1836. A fire caused about seven thousand dollars worth of damage to the hotel in January of 1836. John P. Smith became manager of the Mansion House in January of 1838. Stephen B. Kelly was manager of the hotel in September of 1850. The Mansion House burned a second time in November of 1861. A cotton mill stood on the former site of the hotel by 1883.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of a bound, paginated guest register of the Mansion House of Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. The names of hotel guests and their payments for room and board are recorded on a daily basis between January 2 and December 31, 1837. Specific expenses for cigars, food, and wine are also recorded. In the back of the guest register is a list of accounts payable and receivable (1837–1840) pertaining to the estate of Elijah Bell, deceased.
