CLAIBORNE (J.F.H.) COLLECTION: SCOPE AND CONTENTS

The J.F.H. Claiborne Collection is filmed in its original order. Each large section retains its originally assigned “book letter,” and is subdivided by subject thereunder. “Books A-C” are general correspondence arranged alphabetically by signatory, then chronologically. The second section, “Book C,” consists solely of letters concerning George Poindexter, second governor of Mississippi, although other letters by and about him can be found in different parts of the collection. “Book C” is not a part of “Books A-C” but a separate section in itself. “Book D” represents an assortment of letters, orders, circulars, etc. concerning Captain Isaac Guion and John Sevier. “Book E,” “Early times in Natchez District and Mississippi Territory,” contains information concerning the Committee of Safety in Natchez, the Kemper Expedition, Aaron Burr, and other territorial matters. “Book F” deals with the Indian Wars of 1812 to 1816, the Mexican War, and notable citizens of early Mississippi. Miscellaneous papers, broadsides, and imprints can be found in “Book G.” Due to the overlapping arrangement of the “books,” it is advisable to search the entire collection for items of interest.
