Account book containing bills of lading of David Mayer of Mayersville who shipped river freight from the port of Mayersville up and down the Mississippi river to points in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri via steamboats, including the Sunbeam, the City of Vicksburg, the Golden Rule, the City of Cairo, and the Pargoud. Until the mid-century decline of river traffic, Mayersville, in Issaquena County, was the shipping point on the Mississippi for the cotton of Sharkey and Issaquena counties. David Mayer purchased the site of Mayersville, then called Gipson's Landing, in 1870. The village had a spirited existence enlivened by show boats, river crews, gamblers, and traders, which its present quiescence belies. This volume has approximately 225 pages of accounts and is approximately 21.5 by 27.5 cm. in size.
