PANTHER BURN PLANTATION ACCOUNT BOOKS

1859 - 1862; 1864 - 1865; 1879; 1881 - 1883

This collection consists of two printed volumes (both fragments) by Thomas Affleck, entitled "The Cotton Plantation Record and Account Book" (1857, 7th ed.). Volume one was kept by A. J. McNeill, overseer of Panther Burn Plantation. Entries in the Affleck categories include inventories of stock and implements (1859); daily entries for weather, health of slaves, and agricultural activities (fairly complete January–June, 1859; sketchy June–October, 1859); daily record of cotton picked (1859); a record of "clothing, tools, etc., given out to the Negroes" (1859); the overseer's entry of and receipt for supplies (1859); births and deaths of Negroes (1859); and a record of the weight of each bale of cotton made (1859). Miscellaneous entries (undated) include information on treatment of bilious fever, remedy for pneumonia, cure for simple diarrhea without any bilious symptoms, scarlet fever, the medicinal use of bacon rind, and a receipt for curing hams. Miscellaneous entries for 1861 are tallies for chickens and eggs bought from the servants and inventory of tobacco dispensed to the slaves.

Volume two has entries in the Affleck categories for daily record of cotton picked (1860); births and deaths of Negroes (1860–1862); and record of the weight of each bale of cotton made and pressed (1860). Miscellaneous entries include number of days each hand worked (June–July, 1864) and daily records of work done by each hand (May 1864). Several pages of volume two are mutilated. Volume two also contains numerous invoices, receipts and checks (1879; 1881–1883) for John Willis.
