ROWLAND (DUNBAR) PAPERS

1885 - 1937

Personal correspondence and papers of Dunbar Rowland (Aug. 25, 1864–Nov. 1, 1937), a lawyer, author, historian, and director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from March 15, 1902, to Nov. 1, 1937. This collection, which was brought together from various sources and miscellaneous containers in the Department of Archives and History, is in two alphabetical files: "Manuscripts File" and "Correspondence File." The "Manuscript File," which covers the period from Apr. 24, 1885, to May 27, 1936, contains 218 pieces in 49 folders and is composed of copies of addresses, articles, pamphlets, introductions to books, and miscellaneous writings of Rowland.

The "Correspondence File," which covers the period from Mar. 25, 1890, to Oct. 25, 1937, contains 4,312 pieces in 219 folders, and is composed of personal correspondence and papers and also material pertaining to the Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Historical Society. The file includes papers and correspondence in regard to the publication and distribution of books, insurance, personal accounts, various controversies in which Rowland engaged, and family affairs. Among the letters from J. J. Little and Ives Co. (J. Carr, C. A. Mershon, L. H. Parker, and W. K. Zucker) are 99 items for the period from Sept. 11, 1922, to Mar. 20, 1928. Among the letters from the American Association for International Conciliation are 57 (Jan. 14, 1912–Mar. 6, 1917) from Frederick P. Keppel and 13 (July 1, 1913–Mar. 11, 1914) from Pauline Stearns.
