ALBRECHT (ANDREW C.) MANUSCRIPT

1938

Typed carbon copy of the manuscript, "Natchez, Mississippi, and its Aboriginal Inhabitants" by Andrew C. Albrecht. It was prepared in 1938 for the Statewide Archaeological Project of the Works Progress Administration and sponsored by Louisiana State University.

Part I concerns the geographical and topographical aspects of the Natchez area. Part II is a discussion of the area's earliest inhabitants of this area; particular attention is paid to the Indian mounds and village sites and archaeological developments there, including the work of Benjamin C. Wailes and Caleb Forshey of Jefferson College, the work of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and the excavations at St. Catherine's Creek. Part III is an overview of the Natchez Indian culture. Material for this section is mostly taken from the work of Dr. John R. Swanton. Resources for the other parts of the manuscript include Dunbar Rowland and many French explorers like DuPratz.
